Inflation Surges Past Wage Growth Once Again, Squeezing Household Paychecks Hard Nationwide
Consumer prices climbed 3.4% in August from a year earlier according to data released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Average hourly earnings increased just 3.1% over the same period, causing real average hourly earnings to drop 0.3% from a year prior.
This shift reverses a lengthy period of recovery that began in May 2023 when wage growth generally exceeded inflation. Energy costs played a major role in the reversal, with gasoline prices jumping 3.9% in August alone due to geopolitical conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine.
"A substantial number of Americans are worse off, their incomes are not keeping up with the price increases right now," said Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union.
Economists warn that persistent geopolitical pressures will likely keep inflation elevated relative to wages well into next year. This ongoing squeeze is directly impacting consumer spending, which accounts for approximately two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.
Data from internal member spending and independent market research reveals that shoppers across various income spectrums are shifting toward warehouse clubs and discount grocers like Costco and Aldi to stretch every available dollar.
