Netanyahu Yields to Trump on Gaza, Betting Hamas Will Not Disarm
Pressured by the US administration, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed Monday to move forward with the US plan for the Gaza Strip, though Israel harbors little faith in the ability of international forces to disarm Hamas. The high-stakes four-hour meeting took place in Jerusalem, featuring US envoy Jared Kushner alongside key international mediators.
The understandings reached between Netanyahu and Kushner regarding the 15-point plan for Gaza respond directly to pressing political exigencies, including Israel's upcoming October elections and the US midterms. Under the current arrangement, Israel will maintain control over more than 50% of the Gaza territory it currently holds while halting offensive actions unless faced with immediate security threats.
"We are navigating a complex diplomatic landscape to balance regional security with international demands," said an anonymous Israeli political source close to the negotiations in Jerusalem.
The discussions build on prior talks held in Cairo between Kushner and Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya aimed at securing the militant group's commitment to lay down arms. Regional observers note that while diplomatic channels remain active, deep-seated distrust between the warring parties continues to complicate long-term stability.
The implementation of the White House proposal moves forward under strict diplomatic scrutiny as regional actors assess the durability of the temporary security arrangements.
