Trump Pushes Forward with Arlington Arch, Critics Call Monument Tacky
President Donald Trump is moving forward with plans to erect a 250-foot gilded triumphal arch at Memorial Circle near Arlington National Cemetery. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced on Thursday that excavation work for the controversial monument will begin within the next two weeks. The project aims to establish a towering landmark that dwarfs the nearby Lincoln Memorial before Trump leaves office in January 2029.
The proposed monument has drawn immediate scrutiny because it lacks final approval from the National Capital Planning Commission, which oversees federal land projects in Washington. The commission is not scheduled to review the design again until October 1, mirroring the timeline of Trump's recently approved East Wing ballroom project. Federal reviewers warned that the massive structure would disrupt the surrounding historical landscape.
"After a very long wait, we are preparing to start the excavation work necessary for the Great Triumphal Arch," stated Doug Burgum in an official post on X. Supporters argue the monument will honor the nation's capital, while critics label the design an ego-driven vanity project that violates standard federal planning protocols.
Administration officials noted that the arch would negatively impact nearly 40 landmarks, including obstructing views from President John F. Kennedy's grave and the Eternal Flame. Preservation groups and the National Park Service also raised concerns about ruining historic sightlines meant to symbolize national healing following the Civil War. Public comments submitted to the park service strongly condemned the construction as an insult to the solemnity of the military cemetery.
Federal oversight boards hold the legal authority to halt unapproved construction projects on public land pending formal safety and environmental reviews. Construction crews face strict regulatory hurdles as the National Capital Planning Commission prepares for its upcoming October session.
