Alex Murdaugh Murder Retrial Moved, Judge Orders Change of Venue to Sumter County

Disgraced former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh will face his upcoming murder retrial in Sumter County after circuit court judge Debra McCaslingranted a venue transfer on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The move aims to ensure a fair and impartial proceeding away from the fourteenth judicial circuit, where the Murdaugh family maintained significant local influence for generations. Murdaugh was originally convicted of murdering his wife Maggie and younger son Paul, but those convictions were overturned by the state supreme court in May.

The decision to shift venues is rooted in extraordinary disqualification rates during the original 2023 trial, where fewer than one in seven prospective jurors qualified. Judge McCaslin also highlighted the century-long ties of the Murdaugh family to the region alongside former clerk of court Rebecca "Becky" Hill's improper interference during the initial jury deliberations. These compounding factors created widespread community familiarity and severe institutional complications that compromise local impartiality.

"Public confidence and juror impartiality are better protected by separating the retrial from the courthouse and local environment now inseparably associated with both the original conviction and its invalidation," wrote McCaslin in her eight-page order.

Legal analysts note that moving the trial to Sumter County avoids the massive logistical burdens and expenses of transporting outside jurors into Colleton County while bypassing a compromised local facility. Furthermore, the court determined that Sumter County possesses the necessary courtroom space, advanced technology, and security infrastructure to handle a case of this magnitude.

Jury selection for the heavily anticipated retrial is currently scheduled to begin on April 5, 2027. Multiple pretrial disputes regarding DNA evidence and financial crimes remain pending before the court.
